چکیده

A modified solution combustion approach was used for the first time in the preparation of nanosize zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) composite. ZTA-1 with an average particle size of 37 nm was prepared using corresponding metal nitrates and urea. ZTA-2 with an average particle size of <10 nm was prepared by using mixture of fuels such as ammonium acetate, urea and glycine. The products formed were characterised by powder X-ray diffractometry, Transmission electron microscopy and BET surface area analysis. By using mixture of fuels, the energetics of the combustion reaction and eventually the properties of the combustion product have been changed. A series of combustion reactions were carried out to optimise the fuel ratio combinations required to obtain <10 nm ZTA particles. The microstructure of ZTA consisted of crystallites of Al2O3 and ZrO2 both of which were nanocrystalline as evident from TEM. # 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Synthesis of Al2O3-ZrO2 Nanocomposite by Mechanical Activated Self-propagating High Temperature Synthesis(MASHS) and Ignited via Laser

By consideration of unique properties of composite Al2O3-ZrO2 such as high toughness, high wear resistant and relative low thermal expansion, in this study, nanocomposite of Al2O3-ZrO2 was produced by Mechanical activated Self propagating High-temperature Synthesis (MASHS) using laser beam for ignition. First Al and ZrO2 powders were mixed in the mole ratio of 1:1 and milled for 1, 3 and 6 hour...

Mechanically Activated Combustion Synthesis of B4C-TiB2 Nanocomposite Powder

Boron carbide is one of the hardest materials. The combustion method was used to synthesize B4C-TiB2 nanocomposite powder in a B2O3-Mg-TiO2-C system. An experimental study of the formation of B4C–TiB2 nanoparticles was conducted in the thermal explosion mode. A mixture of B2O3:TiO2:Mg:C at a molecular ratio of 3:1:12:1 was chosen to obtain the B4C–TiB2. This powder mixture was milled for differ...
